TIA, also known as a transient ischemic attack , is a warning sign that a true stroke may happen in the future if something is not done to prevent it.  Our goal at the TIA Clinic at Porter Adventist Hospital is to provide patients with a relaxing, comfortable environment and cost effective, efficient diagnostic testing without the need for an overnight hospital stay.

Many of the diagnostic tests that we offer at our clinic include:

    • A physical examination
    • A neurological exam
    • Blood pressure
    • CT scan
    • Brain MRI
    • Angiogram
    • Echocardiogram
    • Carotid duplex
    • Blood clotting and chemistry tests
    • Complete blood count (CBC)
    • C-reaction protein
    • ECG
    • Serum lipids

Although TIA is different than a stroke the symptoms are the same.  Recognize the warning signs:

    • Muscles weaknesses of the face, arm or leg
    • Numbness or tingling on one side of the body
    • Trouble speaking
    • Eyesight problems
    • Changes in sensation
    • Emotional changes

  • tia-forpat.jpgWhile a transient ischemic attack (TIA) is often described as a "mini-stroke," it is more accurately characterized as a warning sign for a potential stroke. To meet the needs of patients with new onset TIA symptoms, the Porter TIA Clinic is designed to quickly and professionally perform diagnostic testing and neurological consultations. (We see patients within 48 hours of referral from the ED or primary care/specialist's office.)

As part of Centura Health's stroke strategic plan for 2011, Porter will be the model for future outpatient clinics in the management of TIAs. Our goal is to provide your patients with a relaxing, comfortable environment and cost effective, efficient diagnostic testing without the need for a hospital stay; although some patients may require inpatient observation and diagnostic testing for TIA.

If you have a patient you would like to refer to the clinic, please download the referral form and fax to 303-778-2459 or call the clinic at 303-715-7842 (toll free 1-855-7STROKE) for more information. Please provide any pertinent studies performed in the last 6 months (e.g., lipid profile, coagulation studies, ECHO, carotid studies, MRI brain scan, CT brain scan) to avoid redundant testing. As the referring physician, you will receive test results and recommendations for further treatment from our neurologists.

tia-forphy.jpgWhile a transient ischemic attack (TIA) is often described as a "mini-stroke," it is more accurately characterized as a warning sign for a potential stroke according to the American Stroke Association. A TIA occurs when a blood clot briefly blocks a blood vessel to your brain. Although the symptoms of a TIA are similar to other stroke symptoms, they come and go more quickly and most disappear within an hour.

The Porter TIA Clinic is designed to offer you expert diagnostic testing and a neurological consultation quickly without the need for an overnight hospitalization. Within 48 hours of your symptoms, our caring physicians will perform all of the necessary testing (e.g., MRI, CT, Echocardiogram, carotid studies and lab studies) and offer you an expert neurological consultation. Our physicians will also share your test results and recommendations for follow-up care with your primary care physician.

Porter's TIA clinic offers you a relaxing, comfortable environment, including meals and a supportive staff to help you every step of the way. Our goal is to surround you with comfort and care and to make your visit as efficient, effective, and cost-effective as possible. For more information, please call the Porter TIA clinic at 303-715-7842 or Toll Free at 1-855-7STROKE.
