SIR-Spheres®

This incredible technology, designed to treat liver cancer, is used on patients for whom surgery or chemotherapy is not an option. SIR-Spheres® are tiny beads, smaller in diameter than a human hair, which are slowly inserted into the tumor. They exert local radiation and kill the tumor from the inside. Porter Hospital is only one of two offering the new technology in Colorado.

TheraSphere®

Along the same lines as the SIR-Spheres®, TheraSphere® directs treatment at tumors in the liver by using a long flexible tube called a catheter. The catheter is inserted in a patient’s leg and guided through the major artery to one of the two blood vessels that feed the liver. TheraSphere® beads are infused through the catheter into the blood that supplies the cancerous tumor. Localized radiation then works to kill the tumor from the inside. Porter is the only hospital in Colorado to offer this treatment and is one of a handful across the country.
