Breast Cancer Treatment Denver
No two people are exactly alike, so no two treatment plans should be exactly alike either. The breast cancer treatment option you choose will depend on many factors, such as the stage of the cancer, if and where the cancer has spread, your age, personal cosmetic preferences, the type of breast cancer you have and more.
For example, women with early stage breast cancer may choose a less aggressive breast cancer treatment compared to women with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other areas of the body) or inflammatory breast cancer, a more aggressive form of breast cancer. We will take the time to discuss all of your breast cancer treatment options. We will also listen carefully to all of your concerns and your wishes to ensure your breast cancer treatment plan is ideally suited to your unique situation.

Comprehensive Breast Cancer Treatment
Treating breast cancer often involves more than one approach, including many treatment options, such as nipple-sparing mastectomies for better cosmetic outcomes and skin-sparing mastectomies to provide the skin needed for effective, immediate reconstruction. The Center also offers less-invasive surgeries, such as lumpectomies, a targeted surgery in which just the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue are removed.
At the Porter Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care and Treatment Center, we strive to educate women about all of their available options and help them make the best possible decision for them.
Breast Cancer Treatment Options
The following breast cancer treatment options are some of the most common procedures we perform. Let us know if there is another option that we can explore with you.
- Breast conservation - breast-sparing surgery, also called breast conservation, means that the surgeon removes only your cancer and a small amount of surrounding normal tissue, leaving the breast intact. After breast conserrvation, women may also receive breast cancer radiation therapy to keep cancer from returning in that same breast. Some women may also receive chemotherapy and possibly hormone therapy for breast cancer.
- Lumpectomy - sometimes called partial mastectomy, a form of breast conservation, in which the surgeon only removes the cancerous lump and a small amount of surrounding normal tissue, leaving most of the breast intact. Women may also receive breast cancer radiation therapy following a lumpectomy.
- Skin-sparing mastectomy - all of the breast tissue, nipple and areola, are removed, but leaves the breast skin intact. This better facilitates reconstruction, which is often performed during the same surgery mastectomy.
- Nipple-sparing mastectomy - only the breast tissue is removed, leaving the breast skin, areola and nipple intact. Breast reconstruction can often be performed during the same surgery.
- Partial mastectomy - sometimes called lumpectomy, a form of breast conservation, in which the surgeron only removes the cancerous lump and a small amount of surrounding normal tissue, leaving most of the breast intact. Women may also receive breast cancer radiation therapy following a partial mastectomy.
- Total mastectomy - sometimes called simple mastectomy, the surgeon removes all of the breast tissue and the nipple and areola, but not the underlying chest wall muscles. Breast reconstruction can often be performed during the same surgery.
- Radical mastectomy - the surgeon removes the entire breast, including the breast tissue, skin, areola and nipple. The surgeon also removes the lymph nodes under the arm and some of the chest wall muscle. Radical mastectomies are rare, but are sometimes indicated for certain cancers.
- Double mastectomy - sometimes called bilateral mastectomy, both breasts are removed at the same time. This surgery often performed if the patient is at high risk for getting breast cancer in the non-cancerous breast. Breast reconstruction can often be performed during the same surgery.
- Prophylactic mastectomy - for breast cancer prevention - the surgeon removes all of the woman's breast tissue to reduce the risk of breast cancer. While prophylactic surgery may seem extreme, some women with high risk factors, such as testing positive for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, may choose it as a preventive measure based on their breast cancer risk. Women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations have up to an 87 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, compared to about 12 percent in the general population. Prophylactic surgery reduces a woman's chance of developing breast cancer to below the overall population risk. Breast reconstruction can often be performed during the same surgery. - Mastectomy with breast reconstruction surgery - Depending on the type of mastectomy, breast reconstruction can often be done at the same time as the mastectomy. It can also be done at a later time. We will discuss the pros and cons of each approach as it relates to each specific situation.
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy - For women with invasive breast cancer, the surgeon removes a small number of lymph nodes, the sentinel lymph nodes, under the arm to test for cancer cells. They lymph nodes are tested during surgery for immediate results.
