Breast Cancer Nurse Navigators

The Breast Center Team

Navigators are often the first point of contact for patients moving from an initial screening, such as a mammogram, to a more detailed diagnostic workup. They may also be the point of contact as patients leave the health care system and begin their lives as cancer survivors. The navigator is often described as a person who helps patients overcome barriers to care.

Stephanie M. Streed, RNC, CBPN-IC, the nurse navigator at Porter Comprehensive Breast Care, sees herself as part advocate, part educator, part support system and part nurse. Stephanie knows that when working with her patients she is involved in very personal aspects of their lives and respects this privilege. She follows patients through their whole breast cancer care process. Sometimes that means putting them in touch with each other, setting up appointments, recommending questions to ask the doctor or even accompanying patients to appointments. Stephanie is an advocate for each breast cancer patient.

Although the specific responsibilities of navigators vary from setting to setting, they may include:

  • Helping patients get prevention or early detection services
  • Providing information about health insurance
  • Helping patients locate resources within the community, such as wigs and prostheses
  • Notifying patients about clinical trials
  • Helping patients overcome barriers to treatment, such as transportation issues and child care
