5 Million Lives Campaign
Porter Adventist Hospital is proud to participate in the 5 Million Lives Campaign, dedicated to reducing the risk of harm to 5 million patients throughout the nation. This can be saving harm from an infection, harm from receiving the wrong medication, or harm from not receiving a necessary treatment. As part of this campaign, we are working on 12 initiatives that have been shown to reduce the risk of harm for our patients. Some of these initiatives are already in place, and some are just beginning.
The 12 Initiatives
- Calling a Rapid Response Team when a patient’s condition worsens and extra support is needed.
- Providing evidence-based care for patients admitted with acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
- Providing evidence-based care for patients with heart failure.
- Preventing medication errors for high-risk medications such as insulin, narcotics, and sedatives.
- Preventing infections from central lines.
- Preventing infections from surgery.
- Preventing infections for patients on ventilators.
- Reducing the risk of surgical complications.
- Preventing pressure ulcers in patients.
- Prevention MRSA infections.
- Obtaining a list of the patient’s home medication at admission and assuring that the patient is on the appropriate medications during the hospital stay and at discharge.
- Engaging the Board members more in quality and patient safety issues.
