Cancer Support Groups at Porter Adventist Hospital | Denver, Colorado A cancer diagnosis is a life changing event, both for the patient and the family. Research indicates people who get the support they need have more favorable outcomes. In response to this and the mission statement of Porter Adventist Hospital, oncology offers a wide range of support services to cope with the anxiety, fear, depression, panic, vulnerability and other experiences of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Individual and family counseling is available to any oncology patient or family at no charge, regardless of where they are treated. This service is provided by a clinical nurse specialist in psychosocial oncology.

 

The following support groups serve a very unique role to participants in that both patients and families have the opportunity to meet others who are successfully navigating this journey.

Porter Breast Cancer Support Group

A 12-week educational group for women diagnosed with breast cancer within the past year. Each of the 12-week sessions is topic based covering various treatment related issues such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, fitness, nutrition, lymphedema and more. The Porter Breast Cancer Support Group meets weekly from noon to 1:30 p.m. For information about the next session please call Jeanne Currey, RN, MN at 303-778-5832. This group is offered twice a year and requires registration of at least 10 participants to be held. There is no fee, however, registration is required.

Monthly Breast Cancer Support Group

This group is primarily for women diagnosed within the past year and offers education, perspective and support. This group meets on the first Tuesday of each month from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Eagle Conference Room in the main hospital. General Cancer Support Groups

A six week educational support group for families who have a relatively recent cancer diagnosis. Topics include:

  • The nature of cancer
  • Treatment
  • Coping with side effects to treatment
  • Nutrition
  • Fitness
  • Emotional aspects of the cancer journey
  • Financial stresses and resources.

The General Cancer Support Group is offered twice a year in the spring and fall with meetings on Wednesdays 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room. There is no fee, but registration is required. For further information, please call Jeanne Currey, RN, MN at 303-778-5832. Group will not be held for fewer than 10 people.

Survivors of Head and Neck Cancers and Their Families

Meets the last Tuesday of the month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Twin Peaks Conference Room in the main hospital. No registration is required, for further information, please call Jeanne Currey, RN, MN at 303-778-5832.

Kids Alive - Support for Children of Parents with Cancer

One of very few programs in the United States and the only one in the Denver Metro Area. This group has served well over 500 children and families. Open to children ages 6-16. Group meets monthly October through June, usually on the second Saturday of the month, in Twin Peaks Conference Room. Look Good...Feel Better

This free two hour program teaches women undergoing cancer treatment how to cope with changes in their appearance and includes:

  • 12-step makeup guide
  • Skin and nail care
  • Demonstrations on use of wigs, scarves and accessories
  • Complementary makeup kit.

Class is offered twice a year at Porter Adventist Hospital. Contact the American Cancer Society at 303-758-2030, ext. 472 for exact dates. Once you choose a date, you must call and register with Porter at 303-766-3888.

Individual and Family Counseling

Available to any oncology patient and family at no charge. Services are provided by the clinical nurse specialist for oncology support services. There is no fee but appointments are requred. Please call 303-765-3888 to schedule an appointment.
